Facet 3. Monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation: knowledge management, institutions and economics.
The UNCCD 1st Scientific Conference in September 2009 will tackle issues regarding the biophysical and socio-economic monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation.
Monitoring and Assessment of Desertification and Land Degradation: Knowledge Management,and Economic and Social Drivers.
At its 5th meeting, on 24 September, the special segment convened Working Group III on the topic"Monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation: knowledge management and economic and social drivers.
Based on this mandate, the GoE, at its first meeting in Hamburg, formulated within the main theme"Assessment of desertification and land degradation" two specific tasks which fulfill the requirements of the above recommendations, i.e. task 1.4:"Help in developing a web-based glossary of terms relevant for desertification" and task 1.5:"Reinforce a mechanism for an interactive and thematic network to exchange information THEMANET.
In accordance with decision 18/COP.8, the priority theme to beaddressed will be"Bio-physical and socio-economic monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation, to support decision-making in land and water management.
In accordance with decisions 13 and 18 taken at the eighth session, the first scientific conference of the Committee on Science and Technology under the Convention will be organized on the sidelines of the ninth session of the Conference of the Parties and back to back with the ninth session of the Committee,from 22 to 24 September and address the theme:"Bio-physical and socio-economic monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation, to support decision-making in land and water management.
Peer reviewed published journal papers on the theme of the UNCCD 1st Scientific Conference, biophysical and socio-economic monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation to support decision-making in land and water management, have been published in the Journal of Land Degradation and Development special issue: volume 22, issue 2.
By mid-June 2008, the Drylands Science for Development Consortium was selected by the Bureau of the Committee on Science and Technology,on the basis of its expertise on the thematic topic agreed at the eighth session of the Conference of the Parties:"Biophysical and socio-economic monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation, to support decision-making in land and water management.
As a result, the UNCCD 1st Scientific Conference took place during the ninth session of the Conference of the Parties(COP 9) from 22 to 24 September 2009 on the theme"Biophysical and socioeconomic monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation, to support decision-making in land and water management"; followed by the UNCCD 2nd Scientific Conference"Economic assessment of desertification, sustainable land management and resilience of arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas", to be held in Fortaleza, Brazil, from 4 to 7 February 2013.
By its decision 18/COP.8, the COP decided that the priority theme to be addressed by the UNCCD 1st Scientific Conference, which was held in 2009 during the ninth session of the CST,would be'Bio-physical and socio-economic monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation, to support decision-making in land and water management.
The priority issue selected by the COP for the 2008-2009 biennium is"Biophysical and socio-economic monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation to support decision-making in land and water management.
Discussion by the CST Bureau on organizing at the margin of CRIC and COP sessions scientific exhibitions and poster stands on the selected themes to illustrate applied results of research to: proposed theme 2008"Sustainable agriculture and land degradation", proposed theme 2009"Bio-physical and socio-economic monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation, to support decision-making in land and water management" 2008- 2009.
The priority theme to be addressed will be,as per decision 18/COP.8,"Bio-physical and socio-economic monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation, to support decision-making in land and water management.
By its decision 18/COP.8 the COP decided that the priority theme to be addressed by the CST in line with decision13/COP.8 would be'Bio-physical and socio-economic monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation, to support decision-making in land and water management.
The priority theme to be addressed by the next session of the CST in line with the COPdecision shall be:"Bio-physical and socio-economic monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation, to support decision-making in land and water management.
As a result, the UNCCD 1st Scientific Conference took place during COP 9 from 22 to 24 September 2009on the theme"Bio-physical and socio-economic monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation, to support decision-making in land and water management.

From its 2nd to 6th meetings, which took place from 22 to 24 September, the Committee held a special segment as its first scientific conference,the priority theme being"Biophysical and socio-economic monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation to support decision-making in land and water management.
With the added help of a consortium identified by its bureau, it will co-organize its next ordinary session during COP 9 in a predominantly scientific conference format, duly keeping in mind the prioritytheme on biophysical and socio-economic monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation, in order to support decision-making in land and water management.
Working in collaboration with the Institute of Geography in Moscow, Moscow State University and other national institutions,UNEP has undertaken a project on the assessment and mapping of desertification and land degradation in Armenia and the Russian Federation.
The methodological work for the refinement of the UNCCD set of impact indicators is instrumental to achieving the long-term goal of establishing a solid assessment and periodic monitoring of desertification and land degradation.
