Hydrological sections in the Drake Passage, Bransfield Strait and the Loper Strait.
In the Bransfield Strait SSMUs, annual harvest rates varied between zero and about 46.
Project title: Geological andGeophyisical Study of the Bransfield Strait and the Antarctic Peninsula 1988-1991.
The pattern was most clear in the CPUEindex in Subarea 48.1, where most of the catch was from three SSMUs in Bransfield Strait.
The greatest degree of overlap occurred in the Bransfield Strait, and this overlap extended through the austral winter.
The mean Sv of krill swarm tend to be higher in inshore waters in the north of the islands; however,no such tendency was observed in the Bransfield Strait.
It noted that monitoring at CEMP sites in the Bransfield Strait did not substantially overlap in time with the fishery.
For stage 2, local harvest rates may provide some guidance on whether local impacts might be occurring, for example, the concentration of effort in Bransfield Strait.
Perciformes: Artedidraconidae, a new species of toadlike plunderfish from the Bransfield Strait and coastal waters of the South Shetland Islands Antarctica.
Fishing has concentrated in Bransfield Strait in SSMUs Bransfield Strait West(BSW: 81 631 tonnes to date) and Bransfield Strait East BSE: 17 553 tonnes.
The Working Group noted that in 2013/14 and 2014/15 fishing occurred in Subarea 48.1 in December and January, particularly in the southern part of Bransfield Strait Gerlache Strait.
The author noted that the historical Soviet/Russian fleet did not fish the Bransfield Strait but was concentrated near Elephant Island(SSMU APEI) in Subarea 48.1.
Krill was distributed in the majority of the survey area andthe mean density(Sv) of krill swarms tended to be higher in inshore waters to the north of the islands with no such tendency observed in the Bransfield Strait.
It highlighted the increasing numbers of humpback andfin whales in Bransfield Strait as one area where consideration of cetaceans in FBM may be important.
Overall, spatial distribution of biological data is heterogenous; information is concentrated in the region of the South Shetland Islands, Bransfield Strait and South Orkney Islands.
Dr Reiss noted that the vessels had been transiting the Bransfield Strait on several occasions along lines of similar length and direction as the transect lines comprised in designed surveys.
The spatial distribution of thefishery during February and March was also similar in both seasons with a focus towards the central part of Bransfield Strait in April and May prior to the closure of Subarea 48.1.
The Working Group noted that during 2010, Bransfield Strait was free of ice until late into the winter, allowing fishing operations in Subarea 48.1 to continue later into the winter compared to previous years.
The pattern for February andMarch was also similar in both seasons with a focus towards Bransfield Strait in April and May prior to the closure of Subarea 48.1.
None of the CEMP monitoring included observations of arrival mass, which would be expected to reflect the conditions of animals whose foraging distributions would most likely overlap in time andspace with fishing in the Bransfield Strait.
The base catch limit would be distributed among groups of SSMUs(e.g. to the Bransfield Strait SSMUs and Drake Passage SSMUs) based on agreed‘allocation fractions' that would be specified in advance.
WG-EMM-16/17 also explored the detailed fishing patterns in Subarea 48.1 during 2014/15, showing that concentrated fishing took place in two areas, one in the Bransfield Strait and one in Hughes Bay on the Danco coast.
The Subgroup encouraged Members to go through existing acoustic data from surveys andfisheries acquired in the Bransfield Strait area in order to look for candidate locations with appropriate depth and flat bottom for carrying out bottom calibration on different frequencies.
The traditional trawl fleet, as well as the fleet using the continuous pumping method, showed a considerable variability in fishing locations by year andmonth in Subarea 48.1, but within the Bransfield Strait all fleets were aggregated.
The Working Group discussed the change in the distribution of fishing in Subarea 48.1 from Drake Passage to the Bransfield Strait over recent seasons and the potential for such a change to influence the size of krill selected by the fishery.
In developing questions related to krill, the Workshop agreed that a plausible scenario might include a krill fishery research zone(KFRZ)(recognising the value of replication where feasible) within D1MPA,possibly near to existing CEMP sites in the Bransfield Strait.
Sites in Subareas 48.1 and 48.3 showed concordant interannual variation andthe patterns of interannual variability in sites in the Bransfield Strait(Subarea 48.1) showed an increased level of concordance in the period since 2008.
Lee(Republic of Korea) presented examples of acoustic data from two Korean fishing vessels: the Sejong running Simrad ES70 38 and 200 kHz and the Kwang Jae Ho running ES70 38 and 120 kHz,which had been fishing in the South Orkney Islands and Bransfield area in 2013/14.
