The UNECE Working Party on Intermodal Transport and Logistics had postponed, as a result of the current work of UNCITRAL on international transport instruments,work on the preparation of a civil liability regime applicable to European intermodal transport extending to all contracts of carriage involving a sea leg, irrespective of their length or economic importance.
In 2012, the Working Party had taken note of suggestions made by the"Groupement européen du transport combiné"(GETC) that a length of 53 foot(16.15 m) and a width of 8.6 foot(2.6 m) would be in line with the dimensions of most road trailers and land containers used in North America and Mexico andcould also be an optimal length for European intermodal transport units.
In this context, the Working Party was briefed on current work undertaken on a European Directive on Intermodal Loading Units that proposes the introduction,on a voluntary basis, of a European Intermodal Loading Unit(EILU) complying with the essential European intermodal requirements in terms of security, safety, interoperability, handling, securing, strength, coding and identification of units.
