It would be recalled that the Special Rapporteur on the right to food had carried out a mission to Mongolia in August 2004. Despite the concrete steps taken in recent years, hunger and malnutrition remained very pressing in Mongolia but, as pointed out in the national report, hunger was not dueto an inadequate food supply but rather to the inadequate purchasing power of poor people.
The Working Group also reviewed its past missions, to Mongolia and the United States of America, with a view to understanding how such missions could be strengthened and its approach to in-country work be made more robust.
Its cataract project provided 297 free cataract surgeries to the needy as part of three missions to Mongolia and five to Sri Lanka undertaken from 2010 to 2012.
It also requested the secretariat to explore whether it would be possible to arrange a mission of experts to Mongolia to advise the country on that matter.
In support of Goals 4, 5, 6 and 7, the Virtue Foundation initiatives include the following: medical missions to El Salvador;surgical and teaching missions to Ghana; surgical and teaching missions to Mongolia; the donation of medical supplies to Ghana; the Ghana Surgical, Teaching and Non-Invasive Ventilation Programme for children at risk; the launch of a medical clinic and donation of medical equipment to El Salvador; an obstetrics and gynaecology medical mission to Tumu, Ghana; and a dental mission to El Salvador.
On his missions to Mongolia, Nepal, Jordan, Paraguay, Nigeria and Togo, the Special Rapporteur was assisted by independent medical experts qualified to document and assess injuries, in accordance with the Istanbul Protocol, the international guidelines for the assessment of persons who allege torture and ill-treatment, for investigating such cases, and for reporting the findings to appropriate investigative bodies, adopted by the Commission on Human Rights and the General Assembly.
