Report of the Group of Experts on the problem of ammunition and explosives.
The Group recommends that the problem of ammunition and explosives be fully integrated into the following United Nations activities on small armsand light weapons.

I have been requested by the Group of Experts on the problem of ammunition and explosives, as its Chairperson, to submit to you, on its behalf, the present report, which was adopted unanimously.

In its resolution 52/38 of 9 December 1997, the General Assembly requested the Secretary-General to prepare a study on the problem of ammunition and explosives.
The Group takes note of the study on the problem of ammunition and explosives prepared by the study group of experts appointed by the Secretary-General A/54/155.
The United Nations should initiate a study on all aspects of the problem of ammunition and explosives.
The Group took note of the report of the Group of Experts on the problem of ammunition and explosives(see A/54/155), particularly with respect to the keeping of records on, marking and tracing of ammunition and explosives. .

The Monitoring Team also notes that the 1999 Report of the Group of Experts on the problem of ammunition and explosives(A/54/155) contains many recommendations that, if put into effect, would significantly strengthen the implementation of the arms embargo.
Pursuant to that resolution, the Secretary-General has the honour to submit to the Assembly the report of the Group of Experts on the problem of ammunition and explosives.
As noted in the report of the Group of Experts on the problem of ammunition and explosives, marking of military-style ammunition in lots or batches is an important measure that enables the source of manufacture to be traced back to a particular factory, shift or production run.
Taking due note of the report of the Group of Experts on the problem of ammunition and explosives, A/54/155.
Following the completion, in June 1999,of the work of the Group of Experts on the problem of ammunition and explosives(see A/54/155), UNIDIR will be disseminating the results of this work through seminars and publications, thereby assisting the efforts within the United Nations structures to control the illegal spread of small arms.
The nomination by States of a national point of contact for regional and international exchanges of information and cooperation on all aspects of the problem of ammunition and explosives;
At its second session the Group heard a presentation on the conclusions of the work of the Group of Experts on the problem of ammunition and explosives(see A/54/155) and a presentation by the Small Arms Survey(Geneva)and the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research(Geneva) on the findings of a study on the scope and implications of a tracing mechanism for small arms and light weapons.
On the basis of a request by the General Assembly inits resolution 52/38 J, the Secretary-General in 1998 appointed a group of experts to study the problem of ammunition and explosives in all its aspects.
The Group also took into consideration the report of the Group of Experts on the problem of ammunition and explosives(A/54/155), requested by the Assembly in its resolution 52/38 J of 9 December 1997, as well as a series of international legal instruments and other documents dealing with relevant subjects, including explosives, terrorist bombing and transnational organized crime, and other materials obtained or produced by the research of its members.
The United Nations should initiate a study on all aspects of the problem of ammunition and explosives. A/52/298, annex, para. 80 m.
By its resolution 52/38 J of 9 December 1997, the General Assembly requested the Secretary-General to prepare a study on the problems of ammunition and explosives in all their aspects.
Certainly, these problems of ammunition and explosives in all their aspects deserve study by competent experts.
Noting also that the group of technical experts appointed by the Secretary-General to study the problems of ammunition and explosives in all their aspects has held its first meeting.
First, in operative paragraph 3, its requests him to initiate a study on the problems of ammunition and explosives in all their aspects, as early as possible.
Recalling further General Assembly resolution 52/38 J of 9 December 1997,in which the Assembly requested the Secretary-General to initiate a study on the problems of ammunition and explosives in all their aspects, in cooperation with appropriate internationaland regional organizations where necessary.
Mexico supports the initiation of a study on the problems of ammunition and explosives in all their aspects, as referred to in resolution 52/38 J. The Government of Mexico also supports the recommendation concerning the convening of an international conference on the illicit arms trade in all its aspects.
The General Assembly, in paragraph 3 of its resolution 52/38 J of 9 December 1997, entitled“Small arms”,requested the Secretary-General to initiate a study on the problems of ammunition and explosives in all their aspects, as early as possible, within available resources, and in cooperation with appropriate international and regional organizations as necessary.
