It is important to take specific steps to ensure the full implementation of the resolution on the protection and security of small States adopted at the last session.
The protection and security of small States continue to constitute an issue of critical concern to my country.
Fiji would like to register its strong view that the question of the protection and security of small States remains a central concern of the United Nations.
Secondly, the protection and security of small States was related to the overall subject of international peace and security. .
In that regard he commended the initiative taken by Maldives and expressed his appreciation of the resolution it had introduced on the protection and security of small States.
It is therefore necessary that the protection and security of small States remain a very pertinent issue among the concerns of the United Nations.
The development and augmentation of the effectiveness of the Security Council would be of fundamental importance in dealing with the question of the protection and security of small States.

My country strongly emphasizes that the protection and security of small States should remain a central concern of the United Nations.
The Government of the Republic of Maldives is pleased to note the due attention and importance afforded to the item entitled"Protection and security of small States" by the international community.

The question of the protection and security of small States was handled in the draft resolution in basically the same way as in resolution 46/43 of 9 December 1991, but with a revised paragraph 7.
Sri Lanka firmly believed that, with the emergence of a large number of independent sovereign States as a result of the decolonization process, the protection and security of small States had become one of the major responsibilities of the international community.

Mr. BUALLAY(Bahrain) said that his delegation had welcomed the resolutions on the protection and security of small States adopted by the General Assembly. The cold war was over but the world still had many potential trouble spots.
