The secretariat participated in regional cooperation initiatives such as the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and Sahel Initiative(GGWSSI) that focus on DLDD issues.

A number of countries mention their support for African regional and subregional organizations, such as the Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel(CILSS), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development(IGAD),the Southern African Development Community(SADC) and the Sahara and Sahel Observatory OSS.
Active cooperation between the AMU,CILSS and the Sahara and Sahel Observatory(OSS) for the purpose of setting up a regional consultation facility aimed at developing researchand development programmes in the area of desertification control;
Some basins and organizations from within and outside the ECE region working on water and climate change, such as the Drin and the Mekong basins as well as the Sahara and Sahel Observatory(OSS), have already expressed interest in joining the network.
At the regional level, and in order to compare local observations, the Sahara and Sahel Observatory(OSS) implements the Long Term Ecological Monitoring Observatories Network(ROSELT/OSS) programme with the view to producing local indicators having the same meaning, and hence interpretation.
Lastly many reports mention support for regional and subregional cooperation actions run through specialized African organizations such as the CILSS(Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel), IGAD(Intergovernmental Authority of Development), SADC(Southern African Development Community)and OSS Sahara and Sahel Observatory.
The Sahara and Sahel Observatory, an independent international organization based in Tunisia, is composed of African and European countries, regional and international organizations and representatives of civil society, and contributes to adaptation research through data collection and observation.
Noting the important progress achieved on benchmarks and indicators by the Permanent Inter-State Committee on Drought Control in the Sahel(CILSS) and the Sahara and Sahel Observatory(OSS) in Africaand by Parties belonging to the Latin American and Caribbean Group(GRULAC), the COP requested these organizations to submit a progress report to the CST.
In this regard, the Sahara and Sahel Observatory(OSS), which is undertaking surveillance, monitoring and evaluation, and promoting systems of early warning with a view to providing information that will assist in preventing land degradation, is cooperating with vulnerable countries on information sharing and developing indicators at the local level.
By its decision 11/COP(4) of 22 December 2000, the Conference of the Parties took note of the important progress achieved on benchmarks and indicators by the Permanent Inter-State Committee on Drought Control in the Sahel(CILSS) and the Sahara and Sahel Observatory(OSS) in Africaand by Parties in the group of Latin American Caribbean countries and in other regions.
The STK4SD consortium is composed of five major scientific organizations(Agropolis International, DesertNet International,the CGIAR Consortium, the Sahara and Sahel Observatory(OSS) and the Argentine Institute for Arid Zone Research(IADIZA)), plus two associate partners the Institute for Environment and Sustainability(IES) of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre and the Desertification Research Centre(NRD) of the University of Sassari.
