Tracing of weapons.
Exchange of information is essential for tracing of weapons.
The tracing of weapons in conflict situations is uncommon and is usually limited to the activities of United Nations embargo-monitoring groups and certain research organizations.
Courses are also offered at the ILEAs on identification and tracing of weapons.
These include trade and brokering, marking,record-keeping and tracing of weapons, stockpile management, armed violence and the use and misuse of small arms.
Marking at the stage of import could further assist in the rapid tracing of weapons.
However, international cooperation in the tracing of weapons seized in the country has been lacking, as has, consequently, the capture and prosecution of the criminals involved.

These include the development of regional strategies or national action plans on small arms and light weapons; the review and updating of national legislation on small arms and light weapons; the provision of technical standards and standard operating procedures for arms control based on the International Ammunition Technical Guidelines and the International Small Arms Control Standards; the training of security forces on stockpile management, the destruction,marking and tracing of weapons and brokering controls; and the provision of technical equipment.
Comparisons with other regulatory mechanisms for analogous markets(such as the transport of toxic wastes and hazardous products, the regulation of securities and financial markets and institutions,the marking and tracing of weapons and other commercial goods, and treaty instruments containing provisions for judicial cooperation or extraterritorial jurisdiction) should also be examined.
Furthermore, since small arms are typically traced through national police and other law enforcement agencies, United Nations police components in the field, regional and subregional police organizations and INTERPOL subregional bureaus,in particular, could play an important role in building the capacity of national authorities in the marking and tracing of weapons, record-keeping and stockpile security, as well as in the initiation of tracing requests through INTERPOL.
MERCOSUR member and associated States agree with the approach outlined in the report of the Secretary-General(S/2011/255), in which he reports to the Security Council on a number of issues that require particular attention, including trade and brokering, marking,record-keeping and tracing of weapons, stockpile management, armed violence, the misuse of small arms and also the trade in ammunition, problems connected with storage and the importance of tracing ammunition found in conflict settings.
As I have just said, Dr. Blix andDr. El-Baradei stated that they had found no trace of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
