The end of slavery, the emancipation of women, the rise of the welfare state- all were progressive ideas that started out as crazy and“irrational” but were ultimately accepted as basic common sense.
This is exactly the difference in the past between reforming and abolishing slavery, between enlightened monarchy and republicanism, or between colonies run by native collaborators and national independence.
One hundred and forty-three years after the end of slavery, and[43] years after the passage of the Voting Rights Act, an African-American was elected president.
The abolition of slavery is more or less analogous, but after all slavery did not exist in European countries in modern times, and did not concern anything so intimate as the relations of men and women.
