Mr. Ashiki(Japan) said that his delegation considered it important to address the issue of promotion and protection of children's rights in a comprehensive manner and had therefore voted in favour of the draft resolution.
The Chairman said that the Group of Asian States, the Group of Eastern European States and the Group of Western European andother States had nominated respectively Mr. Ashiki(Japan), Ms. Malinovska(Latvia) and Mr. Gibbons(Ireland) for the posts of Vice-Chairmen and the Group of African States had nominated Ms. Baleseng(Botswana) for the post of Rapporteur.
Mr. Ashiki(Japan) said that discrimination based on religion was illegal in his country.
Japan: Credentials from the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, signed on 7 November 2008, stating that Yukio Takasu has been appointed representative of Japan on the Security Council, Norihiro Okuda, deputy representative, and Shigeki Sumi, Akio Miyajima,Takashi Ashiki, Tetsuya Kimura, Tomohiro Mikanagi, Yutaka Arima, Naoki Kumagai and Jun Miura, alternate representatives.
Mr. Ashiki(Japan) said that his delegation welcomed the adoption of the resolution and supported the work of the Centre.
In accordance with rule 15 of the rules of procedure of the functional commissions of the Economic and Social Council, and pursuant to Council resolution 1987/21 and decision 2002/234, the Commission on the Status of Women, at the 1st meeting of its fifty-fourth session, on 13 March 2009, elected, by acclamation, Armen Martirosyan(Armenia) as Chair, and Leysa Sow(Senegal), Roberto Storaci(Italy)and Takashi Ashiki(Japan) as Vice-Chairs of the fifty-fourth and fifty-fifth sessions of the Commission.
Mr. Ashiki(Japan) said that his delegation would like more time to decide on the issue and to consult its capital.
Following the resignation of Roberto Storaci(Italy), Julio Peralta(Paraguay)and Takashi Ashiki(Japan), the Commission, at the first meeting of its fifty-fifth session on 12 March 2010, elected by acclamation Filippo Cinti(Italy) and María Luz Melon(Argentina) as Vice-Chairs for the fifty-fifth session.
Mr. Ashiki(Japan) said that the report of the Human Rights Council should be submitted directly to the plenary Assembly.
Mr. ASHIKI(Japan) said that the Japanese delegation had two comments on draft resolution A/C.4/49/L.13, which had just been adopted.
Mr. Ashiki(Japan) said that his delegation had been in favour of holding two annual sessions in parallel chambers in 2008 and 2009.
Mr. ASHIKI(Japan) said that during 1994 the international community had witnessed historic progress in the Middle East peace process.
Mr. Ashiki(Japan) commended the Human Rights Council for its work but said that its report should be presented directly to the General Assembly.
Mr. Ashiki(Japan): My delegation would like to make a general statement on draft resolution A/64/L.14, entitled"The Alliance of Civilizations.
Mr. Ashiki(Japan) welcomed the decision by Myanmar to release political prisoners but was concerned by the sentencing of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
Mr. Ashiki(Japan), Ms. Malinovska(Latvia) and Mr. Gibbons(Ireland) were elected Vice-Chairmen and Ms. Baleseng(Botswana) was elected Rapporteur by acclamation.
Mr. Ashiki(Japan): Japan abstained in the voting on this resolution in the light of the various possible implications of adopting it under this particular agenda item.
Mr. Ashiki(Japan) said that, in light of climate change and the global food crisis, it was urgent to find a way to address the issues raised by complicated displacement situations.
Mr. Ashiki(Japan) expressed regret that the text of the Optional Protocol had been changed at the last minute, without leaving enough time for interested delegations to hold the necessary consultations.
Mr. Ashiki(Japan) said that the Human Rights Council played a significant role in broadening the areas in which the international community's common values-- human rights and fundamental freedoms-- were assured.
Mr. ASHIKI(Japan) said that his country hoped that the Declaration of Principles signed by the PLO and Israel would be the first step towards a just, lasting and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.
Mr. Ashiki(Japan) said that his delegation welcomed the ongoing study of the independent expert and wished to convey its concern at the fact that violence against children in the family and at school was increasing.
Mr. Ashiki(Japan) pointed out that technical progress was a mixed blessing, as it also promoted transnational organized crime, and in particular human trafficking, cybercrime, weapons and drugs trafficking, and corruption.
Mr. Ashiki(Japan) said that the Second Review Conference would give States parties an opportunity to review achievements, identify future challenges and at the same time renew their individual and collective commitments to mine action.
