Mr. Azwai(Libyan Arab Jamahiriya)(interpretation from Arabic): The General Assembly has had an opportunity, at a number of its previous sessions, to look into the question of the use by certain developed countries of coercive economic measures against developing countries in order to discourage such countries from taking certain sovereign decisions or to force them to adopt specific policies that do not conform to their choices and convictions.
Mr. Azwai( Libyan Arab Jamahiriya)( interpretation from Arabic): The celebration of the International Year of the Family in 1994 reflects the international community 's awareness, as represented by this General Assembly of the United Nations, that the family is the embodiment at the popular level of all the strengths and weaknesses in the fields of social and developmental welfare in society and that it provides society with a uniquely comprehensive means of tackling all social issues.
Mr. Azwai( Libyan Arab Jamahiriya)( interpretation from Arabic): I should like, at the outset, to inform the international community, through the United Nations General Assembly that the 26th of October is a day of mourning in my country. On 26 October, 1911, my country was the victim of a colonialist invasion by Italy, during which Italy incarcerated thousands of Libyans in concentration camps prior to sending them into exile on Italian uninhabited islands where most of them perished from hunger and disease.
