Second Committee(j) The role of the international community in the prevention of the radiation threat in Central Asia see para. 75.
Work to be undertaken: The Working Group will, as input into the Partnership on Water for Sustainable Development for the 12 countries in Eastern Europe,the Caucasus and Central Asia(see programme element 2.7) and other partnerships, make hoc arrangements- at the request of the Meeting of the Parties, its Bureau, its Working Groups and/or UNECE countries- following the terms of reference of the Advisory Network on Legal Instruments under the Convention ECE/MP. WAT/5, annex IV.
Several projects are under way to rehabilitate the highway between the main cities of Central Asia see box 2.
The Convention secretariat contributed to projects and programmes implemented by the partners within the capacity-building framework through, for example,advising on project scope and activities(with regard to the TACIS project in Central Asia(see para. 29)), and contributing to training and other capacity-building events e.g. the regional meeting of the Aarhus Centres in 2006(see para. 36), the regional training organized by the REC in the context of the project in South-Eastern Europe(SEE) see para. 30.

In 2008 and 2009, the secretariat prepared notes describing progress in the implementation of the ActionPlan for Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia see ECE/EB. AIR/WG.5/2008/11 and ECE/EB. AIR/WG.5/2009/13.
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan all had improved water supply andsanitation in most urban areas, while water supply in rural areas was much less improved throughout Central Asia see box 2.
Use of social media tools was mostly reported by all EU member States and Norway, as well as by almost all countries of Eastern Europe,the Caucasus and Central Asia see graph 3.1 of the accompanying document.

The responses also indicated that the Network should continue to have a focus on air pollution and needed to ensure relevance forcountries in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia(see annex II). Funding was currently being explored.

The trans-Caspian route by rail orroad provides the shortest link to an ocean-going seaport from Central Asia see map 2.
A more direct route from Mashhad to the same port is expected to be built across the desert directly from Mashhad to Bafq(790 km) in the next few years(perhaps by 2000), thereby considerably shortening(by more than 900 km)the distance for access to the Persian Gulf from Central Asia see map 4.
Those new instruments are being tested for collecting information on organized criminal groups in two regional projects in West Africa and Central Asia see para. 50 below.
An overview of the evolution of child mortality rates-- a key indicator of early-childhood care-- indicates that, while progress is being made in all regions of the world, extreme disparities exist, with sub-Saharan Africa recording the highest rates,higher than those observed in South and West Asia and approximately three times higher than those observed in the Arab States and Central Asia see table 2.
