Cold-water corals.
Since 2004, ICRI has been also addressing cold-water corals.
A draft programme of work on cold-water corals will be presented for adoption at the next general meeting.
In the North-East Atlantic, measures have been adopted to protect cold-water corals.
Areas such as seamounts, hydrothermal vents, cold-water corals and other vulnerable ecosystems were given special attention.
National fisheries measures adopted to protect seamounts and cold-water corals.
Cold-water corals are typically found along submerged edges and slopes, on summits and along margins of seamounts, on upper continental slopes and ridge hills and in canyons and trenches.
Concern was also expressed about the impacts of ocean acidification on both warm and cold-water corals.
Cold-water corals and hydroids 14. Certain cold-water corals and hydrozoans, primarily those potentially or actually forming forests, gardens and reefs, are members and indicators of vulnerable communities.
Currently the main ecosystem concern relates to the impact of bottom trawls on seamounts and cold-water corals.
As will be seen, the distribution of these species is frequently associated with seamounts, ridges and cold-water corals, where the ecosystem impact is on vulnerable habitats as well as fisheries biomass.
In addition to the vulnerability of those stocks to overfishing, fishing on seamounts affects benthic fauna such as sponges, hydroids and ascidians,as well as cold-water corals.
Within ecosystems, seamounts, hydrothermal vents and cold-water corals may be regarded as ecotopes, which are expected to occur as numerous, small patches, scattered among areas of larger ecosystems.1.
The Panel predicts that, by 2100,large portions of the ocean will be so acidic that they will cease to support cold-water corals altogether.
In the absence of any currently agreed measures to protect seamounts and cold-water corals in areas beyond national jurisdiction, it is helpful to look at some examples of the national measures adopted by a number of countries.
The Republic of Korea also hopes that the international community will adopt and implement measures for the protection of vulnerable marine ecosystems, including seamounts, hydrothermal vents and cold-water corals.
The decision would have ICRI include cold-water corals in its ambit and create a working group and related work programme on the topic the final report of the meeting was not available at the time of writing.
Although scientists generally agree that it is difficult at present to predict the impact of human activities on deep-sea species, there is some evidence of the impact of trawling on cold-water corals.
Those occurring in areas within andbeyond national jurisdiction include spawning and nursery grounds, cold-water corals, seamounts, various features associated with polar regions, hydrothermal vents, deep-sea trenches and submarine canyons, and oceanic ridges.
The Republic of Korea also hopes that the international community will adopt and implement measures for the protectionof vulnerable marine ecosystems, including seamounts, hydrothermal vents and cold-water corals.
Within such hierarchies, the examples of VMEs identified in General Assembly resolution 61/105(i.e., seamounts, hydrothermal vents and cold-water corals) approximate, in technical terms, to ecotopes which are the finest scale units used in mapping ecosystems.
It called upon States and international organizations to take action urgently to address, in accordance with international law, destructive practices that have adverse impacts on marine biodiversity and ecosystems, including seamounts, hydrothermal vents and cold-water corals.
Accordingly, we see the time-bound measures proposed in this year's draft resolution to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems, including seamounts, hydrothermal vents and cold-water corals from destructive bottom-fishing practices as a first important step in addressing this problem.
The report,"Cold-water corals: out of sight- no longer out of mind", was launched by UNEP in June 2004 at the World Environment Day celebrations in Barcelona, Spain, and was subsequently released on 28 June 2004 at the International Coral Reef Symposium in Okinawa.
This will include consideration of how to manage the risks andmitigate the adverse effects of destructive fishing practices on vulnerable marine ecosystems, including cold-water corals located beyond national jurisdiction.
In this respect,a"Statement of concern"(Coos Bay Statement) concerning the risks caused by deep-sea fisheries to seamounts, cold-water corals and other vulnerable deep-sea ecosystems was addressed to the Secretary-General by a group of deep-sea biologists in October 2003.
Shoaling or shallowing of the saturation horizon, which has already occurred in certain parts of the ocean, reduces the habitat available for calcifying organisms reliant on the carbonate minerals and has implications for ecosystem productivity, function and the provision of services, especially for cold anddeep-water species such as cold-water corals.
These are the benthic impact of bottom trawls on seamounts and cold-water corals; overfishing for discrete high-seas fish stocks(in particular those associated with seamounts) that fall outside current regulatory frameworks; and proposals, particularly in the framework of CBD, to establish marine protected areas on the high seas.
In its resolutions 58/240 and 59/24, the Assembly reiterated that need, addressing its call to States as well as international organizations and including cold-water corals and hydrothermal vents as ecosystems of concern.
Mexico emphasized that it was very important to conserve VMEs and their biodiversity as far as possible, and it thus supported an international moratorium on bottom trawling in areas outside the jurisdiction of States(i.e., the Area), especially in areas where there were fragile ecosystems, such as seamounts, hydrothermal vents and cold-water corals.
