The Middle East is one of the regions that the international community is trying to free from the nuclear nightmare and from all weapons of mass destruction in accordance with General Assembly resolutions and paragraph 14 of Security Council resolution 687(1991),which provides for the establishment of a zone free from weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, and all missiles for their delivery.
The European Union further stresses that the creation of a secure and stable environment for all States,which would facilitate the establishment of a zone free from weapons of mass destruction, is first and foremost the responsibility of the States in the Middle East.
