Thus, the Act was designed to address the concern of Maori at the gradual loss of Maori freehold land andalso to establish structures for the more effective use, management and development of multiple-owned Maori land.
The principles of the Act and the role of the Maori Land Court in upholding these principles were described in paragraphs 67-68 of New Zealand's last report and they have not changed.
The Maori Land Court administration reflects the importance of Maori land information which, like the land itself, is a taonga(treasure) of Maori people to be kept safe.
Other provisions include requirements for judges appointed to the Maori Land Court to be suitable in terms of their knowledge and experience of Maori language and culture and of the Treaty of Waitangi.

A number of applicants have also commenced use of the Maori Land Court process seeking customary rights orders and the Government is actively involved in those applications.
