Mr. STEPHANOU(Greece), speaking in exercise of the right of reply, said he wished to make it clear that the delegation of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia had used the incorrect name for that country in its statement at the previous meeting.
At its sixtieth session, the General Assembly will need to fill the vacancies that will arise upon the expiry of the terms of office of Mr. Bettati, Mr. Endo, Ms. Myers,Mr. Paranhos Velloso and Mr. Stephanou.
Since the terms of office of Mr. Bettati, Mr. Endo, Ms. Myers,Mr. Stephanou and Mr. Velloso will expire on 31 December 2005, it will be necessary for the General Assembly at its sixtieth session to appoint five persons to fill the resulting vacancies.
Appointed the following persons members of the International Civil Service Commission for a four-year term of office beginning on 1 January 1998: Mr. Mario Bettati, Mr. João Augusto de Medicis, Ms. Lucretia Myers,Mr. Alexis Stephanou and Mr. Ku Tashiro.

Mr. STEPHANOU(Greece), speaking in exercise of the right of reply, said that, despite the interpretation placed on the resolution by the representative of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the text of the resolution was self-explanatory and would have no meaning if it were interpreted differently.
The Committee decided, by acclamation, to recommend that the General Assembly appoint Mr. Minoru Endo(Japan), Mr. Joao Augusto de Medicis(Brazil), Mr. Mario Bettati(France),Mr. Alexis Stephanou(Greece) and Ms. Lucretia F. Myers(United States of America) as members of the International Civil Service Commission for a four-year term of office beginning on 1 January 2002.

Mr. STEPHANOU(Greece), speaking in exercise of the right of reply, said that in resolution 817(1993) the Security Council had recommended the admission to membership in the United Nations of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and explicitly stated that that State would be referred to as such for all purposes within the United Nations pending settlement of the difference that had arisen over the name, a settlement which had not yet been achieved.
