Cooperation with the private sector is pursued through a network of the region's chambers of commerce; and creating an environment for private sector participation in infrastructure development features prominently in the work of the Committee on Transport,Communications, Tourism and Infrastructure Development.

We are happy that India proposed that initiative for the work programme of the very first session of the ESCAP Committee on Transport,Communications, Tourism and Infrastructure Development.
The substantive responsibility for this subprogramme lies with the Transport,Communications, Tourism and Infrastructure Development Division, and the strategy will be to assist countries of the region.
These include the Committee on Regional Economic Cooperation; the Committee on Socio-Economic Measures to Alleviate Poverty in Rural and Urban Areas; the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources Development; the Committee on Transport,Communications, Tourism and Infrastructure Development; and the Committee on Statistics.
Quarterly update of the ESCAP home page on transport,communications, tourism and infrastructure development on the World Wide Web; and biannual updates of the ESCAP home pages on the New Delhi Action Plan on Infrastructure Development in Asiaand the Pacific, the Asian Highway and the Trans-Asian Railway;
Five reports on issues related to transport,communications, tourism and infrastructure development;
Quarterly update of the ESCAP home page on transport,communications, tourism and infrastructure development on the World Wide Web; and biannual updates of the ESCAP home pages on the New Delhi Action Plan on Infrastructure Development in Asiaand the Pacific, the Asian Highway and the Trans-Asian Railway;

Serve as a mobilizer of ideas and a catalyst for action in the transport,communications, tourism and infrastructure development sectors; recommend policy options to achieve tangible results in improving the efficient provision, management, operation, maintenance and pricing of transport, tourism facilities, infrastructure and services, taking into account equity, safety and environmental considerations; promote intraregional and interregional transport linkages, in particular the Asian Highway and Trans-Asian Railway, services, facilitation measures and tourism; and enhance national capacities.

The Commission decided to retain the five-committee structure with changes as follows:(a) three thematic committees, namely, the Committee on Regional Economic Cooperation and its Steering Group, the Committee on Socio-economic Measures to Alleviate Poverty in Rural and Urban Areas and the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources Development; and(b) two other committees, namely, the Committee on Transport,Communications, Tourism and Infrastructure Development and the Committee on Statistics.
