I fully share the views expressed in thestatement of the distinguished Ambassador of Italy, Mr. Alessandro Vattani.
I am sure I speak on behalf of all of us in wishing Ambassadors Ledogar and Vattani and their families happiness and every success for the future.
I give the floor to the representative of Italy, Ambassador Vattani.
On entry into force,we would like particularly to thank Ambassador Vattani, the Friend of the Chair, for providing six options.

Ambassador Vattani of Italy also deserves our gratitude and appreciation for his effective leadership in conducting the initial phase of this session.

My gratitude also goes to your predecessors, Ambassador Vattani of Italy and Ambassador Kurokochi of Japan, for the excellent manner with which they conducted our previous deliberations.
I now have pleasure in giving the floor to the representative of Italy, Ambassador Vattani.
I would also like to avail of this opportunity to thank your predecessor Ambassador Vattani of Italy who carried out his duties in an exemplary manner.
Ambassador Vattani successfully steered the Conference at a difficult time, and we all owe him a debt of gratitude for his efforts to lay the ground for substantive work at the start of the 1995 session.
As we all know, two of our distinguished colleagues, Ambassadors S. Ledogar of the United States and A. Vattani of Italy, will soon be leaving the Conference.
I would also thank Ambassador Vattani of Italy and Ambassador Kurokochi of Japan, the outgoing President of the Conference who guided the Conference very efficiently and skilfully during the previous month.
I would also like to pay tribute to the hard work and commitment of your predecessors, Ambassadors de Icaza, Nanjira,Kurokochi and Vattani, as well as those of the secretariat of the Conference.
The PRESIDENT: Thanks to the untiring efforts of my predecessor, Ambassador Vattani of Italy, the Conference was able to adopt its agenda and start, without delay, substantive work on a comprehensive test-ban treaty.
I also wish to welcome the new colleagues who have joined us- Mr. Palmeira Lampreia of Brazil, Mr. Sánchez Arnau of Argentina, Mr. Omar of Ethiopia, Mr. Meghlaoui of Algeria,Mr. Tarre Murzi of Venezuela and Mr. Vattani of Italy.
I should also like to use this occasionto thank your predecessor, Ambassador Vattani of Italy, for the excellent manner with which he conducted our work during the previous month.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend a cordial welcome to the new colleagues who have taken up their duties as representatives to the Conference- Ambassador Yousuf Omar of Ethiopia,Ambassador Juan Carlos Sánchez Arnau of Argentina, Ambassador Alfredo Tarre Murzi of Venezuela and Ambassador Alessandro Vattani of Italy.
May I also express our appreciation andthanks to your predecessor, Ambassador Alessandro Vattani of Italy, for his contribution in bringing this year's CD session into a smooth start?
Let me also thank His Excellency Ambassador Vattani of Italy for having started the work of the CD so well during this year and for the leadership that he provided us, especially during the difficult consultations which he conducted at the beginning of this session of the Conference.
I would also like to pay tribute to the Ambassador of Japan, Mrs. Kurokochi, and the Ambassador of Italy,Ambassador Vattani, your predecessors, for the exemplary way in which they carried out their important functions.
Mr. VATTANI(Italy) said that Italy, as host to the Conference, was particularly pleased to welcome the creation of the Statute, an event of historic importance and a decisive step forward in the development of international criminal law and in the prevention and punishment of crimes which were an offence to the conscience of mankind.
Let me also expressmy delegation's appreciation of, and thanks to, your distinguished predecessors, Ambassador Vattani and Ambassador Nasseri, for their stewardship of the CD during its critical months.
Mr. VATTANI(Italy)(translated from French): Mr. President, first of all I would like to add my voice to those of all my colleagues who have expressed their feelings of admiration for the action you have taken, the mastery you have shown in your negotiations, the inventive nature of the method you adopted in trying to find a solution to this fundamental issue of the expansion of the membership of the Conference on Disarmament.
At the outset, allow me to express my appreciation to my predecessor, Ambassador Vattani of Italy, and all other delegations who have welcomed me so kindly into their midst and for the greetings extended to me.
Mr. VATTANI(Italy)(translated from French): Mr. President, first of all allow me to express Italy's best wishes for the role that you are playing in addition to the other role that has already been entrusted to you for the entire year, that of bringing us to the successful conclusion of negotiations which can give us a good CTBT by the date desired by all of us, that is to say, before the end of June 1996.
I would like to welcome our new colleagues, Ambassador Meghlaoui of Algeria, Ambassador Sánchez Arnau of Argentina, Ambassador Omar of Ethiopia,Ambassador Vattani of Italy and Ambassador Murzi of Venezuela and to join in the expressions of good wishes to those who have recently concluded their assignments here.
