During March, experts of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union together with the Coalition partners had conductedsignificant work to select information to prepare the alternative report for the following Ukraine's reporting to be held in 2017.
Iryna Fedorovych, the co-author of the alternative report, prepared by the NGOs, hit the bull's eye saying that“Our officials, probably, hold a stand that two hours of shame worth staying two days in Geneva.”.
UNDP assisted the network of women's and human rights CSOs in preparation of the alternative report on Ukraine's Implementation of the CEDAW which highlighted gender issues, including those pertinent to rural women's rights, not covered by the official government report. .
Authors of the alternative report note the lack of professionalism and bias of the SMS staff,“Often, the SMS staff ignore evidence of a well-founded fear provided by the applicants or available in credible sources of information on the human rights situation in the country of origin. Sometimes, they proceed to distort the applicant's statement and other evidence to find grounds for rejection”.
One can read two major questions between the lines of the alternative report- what good are laws that fail to protect victims of discrimination or action plans that never include budget for their implementation?
Earlier, the CPLR experts published an Alternative Report on the independence of the judicial system in Ukraine, which concerned the events that took place in the judicial area, and provided their own, critical evaluation of conclusions, publications and opinions of the HCJ.
And this year for the first time in a coalition of human rights organizations we prepare alternative reports to UN bodies- the Committee for Human Rights and the Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which pointed to the positive achievements and remaining shortcomings in Ukraine's fulfillment of its international obligations.
During the discussion the interim results of alternative reports prepared by human rights defenders in 2015 to the UN Committee on Human Rights and the UN Committee against Torture, as well as thematic reports on the results of monitoring missions in Donbass and the AR Crimea were presented.

The No Borders Project and its partners prepared the alternative report to Ukraine's Periodic Report under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. The alternative report provides evaluation of the status of implementation of the CERD concluding observations on Ukraine's 19-21 st periodic reports(CERD/C/UKR/CO/19-21, 14 September 2011).
