In prison Saint Onesimus served the Apostle Paul like a son.
I beg you for my child, whom I have become the father of in my chains, Onesimus.
The brothers went to Rome together with Onesimus, Erasmus and fourteen other Christians.
Philemon was a prominentfirst-century Christian who owned a slave named Onesimus.
In his old age, St Onesimus occupied the bishop's throne at Ephesus, after the Apostle Timothy.
In Philemon, Paul did not condemn slavery, but he presented Onesimus as a Christian brother instead of a slave.
Onesimus was still the property of Philemon, and Paul wrote to smooth the way for his return to his master.
Paul attempted to unite both Philemon and Onesimus with Christian love so that emancipation would become necessary.
With Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They shall make known unto you all things which are done here.
After the death of the Apostle Paul, St Onesimus served the apostles until their end, and he was made a bishop.
Somehow Onesimus came into contact with the apostle Paul while the latter was in prison(possibly in Rome), and through Paul's proclamation of the Gospel he became a Christian.
After he received the letter, St Philemon not only forgave Onesimus, but also sent him back to Rome to the apostle.
Through Paul's witnessing to him, Onesimus had become a Christian(Philemon 10) and Paul wanted Philemon to accept Onesimus as a brother in Christ and not merely as a slave.
Guilty of an offense against his master and fearing punishment, St Onesimus fled to Rome, but as a runaway slave he wound up in prison.
Although the name“Onesimus” means“useful,” Onesimus proved himself“useless” when he ran away from his master and perhaps even stole from him(Philemon 18).
After confessing to the apostle that he was a runaway slave, Onesimus was directed by Paul to return to his master and become“useful” again.
His theological writings include three anonymously published religious romances: Philochristus(1891),where he tried to raise interest in Gospels reading, Onesimus(1882), and Silanus the Christian(1908).
In order to help pave the way for Onesimus' peaceful return home, Paul sent him on his way with a letter addressed to Philemon, a letter in which he urged Philemon to forgive his slave for having run away and“to receive him as you would receive me”(v. 17),“no longer as a slave, but as a beloved brother”(v. 16).
The theme I have chosen for this year's message is drawn from Saint Paul's letter to Philemon,in which the Apostle asks his co-worker to welcome Onesimus, formerly Philemon's slave, now a Christian and, therefore, according to Paul, worthy of being considered a brother.
