In December 1959, Hiroo Onoda, a Japanese army intelligence officer, was officially declared dead.
One of his soldiers surrendered, but Onoda refused to do so.

Disillusioned by the comfort and fame, Onoda left Japan, moved to Brazil and became a cattle rancher.
In March of 1974, 29 years after World War II was over, the urban legend,Hiroo Onoda, came back from the dead.
After the defeat of the Japanese by Americans, Onoda fled to the mountains along with his three subordinates and began a guerrilla war.
Onoda and two of his remaining men continued to attack the local population, burn their farms and disrupt the community.
Suzuki was prepared to die for his mission of finding Onoda, a panda and the Abominable Snowman.
Onoda lived alone for another twenty years, and became legend among Japenese and Filipino nationalists who believed that he had died.
For the next five years, despite losing his comrades, Onoda would continue to fight on and refuse to surrender.
Years prior, Onoda had been deployed to the small island of Lubang in the Philippines to prevent enemy attacks from the United States.
For about 30 years, from late 1944 to March 10, 1974,former lieutenant Hiroo Onoda hid in the jungle of the Philippine island of Lubang.
When he found Onoda, he was on a mission travelling around the world to find“Lieutenant Onoda, a panda, and the Abominable Snowman, in that order.”.
The man who found him, Norio Suzuki,was traveling around the world to look for,“Lieutenant Onoda, a panda, and the Abominable Snowman, in that order.”.
But, a few Japanese soldiers- including Onoda and three of his men- still hid in the islands, completely unaware that the war was over.
His last companion, Private First Class Kinsichi Kozuka,was shot by police in 1972 as he and Onoda were destroying stores of rice at a local farm.
Onoda was prepared to die for his country, and refused to surrender until he was personally discharged by the Lieutenant general, who had given him orders to fight in Lubang.

On March 10, 1974, Onoda brought a report for Taniguchi and surrendered to the Philippine authorities, having a good Arisaka type 99 rifle, 500 rounds of ammunition for it, several hand grenades and a samurai sword.
The story of the mysterious holdout caught the attention of a young adventurer named Norio Suzuki,who set out to find“Lieutenant Onoda, a panda, and the Abominable Snowman.
Taniguchi flew to Lubang and relieved Onoda of his duties, much to the relief of the locals; Onoda had harassed them for thirty years as part of his misguided effort to help Japan win the war.
Suzuki was confident that despite the failed attempts of search parties conducted by the Japanese, Philippine, and American governments for nearly thirty years,he would be the one to finally find Onoda and bring him home.
In October 1945, the Japanese government attempted to notify soldiers who werehiding in remote jungles that the war was over, but Onoda and his compatriots believed the newspapers and flyers that had been dropped by aircraft to be Allied propaganda.
