Threadripper 2 Teaser Video Hurls Down Gauntlet.
At higher resolutions Threadripper takes the cake.
Last year, AMD's Threadripper blew the doors off Intel's HEDT business by offering far more CPU cores at a much lower overall price.
Next articleAMD reduces the price of Ryzen Threadripper 1950X CPU.
The name of Threadripper is Ryzen Threadripper.
AMD released a Cinebench R15 measurement for Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX.
Put simply, the Core i9-7900X didn't match the Threadripper 1950X and it's not going to match the 2950X any better.
But given that Threadripper is a modular design, there was never a reason why AMD couldn't simply slap down real die and activate a 32-core CPU analogous to what they have used for Epyc.
D rendering applications love threads, and Threadripper delivers them in spades.
That's what makes the Threadripper 1920X such a deal. The 1950X has 1.6x more cores than the Core i9-7900X, in addition to being $200 cheaper.
It's no accident that we talk about the Core i9-7980XE as a competitor for the Threadripper 2950X as opposed to the Core i9-7900X.
Zip is extremely fond of Ryzen and Threadripper, though the 7900X is somewhat faster than Broadwell-E. 10 CPU cores aren't nearly enough;
Of course the lower hash rate means youwould be getting three times the performance from the Threadripper processor, but the Ryzen still gives a better return.
AMD's top two Threadripper CPUs will stay at $999 and $799, but the eight-core Threadripper 1900X is dropping to $449(See on Amazon).
Modern high-end processors like the Intel i7 Extreme and AMD Ryzen Threadripper series, along with various Xeons support quad-channel memory.
AMD's decision to push harder on Threadripper configurations is a little surprising, given how few workloads scale up this well, but it would imply that Threadripper's overall sales and response have been strong enough to justify bringing out a new version of the product.
The Core i9-7900X isn't much faster than the Broadwell-based Core i7-6950X, and Threadripper makes hash of both, with significantly faster render times.
Today, AMD is launching two cores immediately- the Threadripper 2950X and 2920X, which refresh last year's 16-core and 12-core parts, as well as a set of 24-core and 32-core chips, the 2970WX and 2990WX.
But if you're the kind of user with a 3D rendering or multimedia encoding habit, including audio processing-we would take the Threadripper 1950X over the Core i7-8086K, hands-down.
The 24-core and particularly the $1,799 32-core Threadripper 2990WX have no competition in Intel's HEDT lineup, at least not on core count.
It's possible that AMD won't change the baseline core count of a Ryzen 2 die, butmight offer CPUs with up to 16 cores as part of a lower-cost Threadripper alternative on its conventional desktop socket.
You can also snag a discounted 16-Core AMD Ryzen Threadripper CPU, affordable Bluetooth earphones, and more more among today's best deals.
It's not clear if there are higher core counts that can be pulled down into the LGA2066 socket or not,so any updates Intel makes to counter Threadripper 2 may also require motherboards with new sockets.
Let's assume, for the sake of our discussion, that AMD's 32-core Threadripper 2 will target a price point between $2,000 and $2,500, as seems likely given the Threadripper 1950X's pricing.
It's not clear if Intel can scale LGA2066 to higher core counts without requiring a full motherboard swap at even larger price premiums-and that's before we get to the $1,000 price difference between Threadripper 1950X($1,000, 16-cores) and the Intel Core i9-7980XE($2,000, 18 cores).
You're still going to need a lot of scratch to play in this market-the $649 price on Threadripper 2920X is still a lot of cash- but if you can afford to play in this market, it's where AMD is most competitive.
Anybody who paid$ 1,700 for a Core i7-6950X in February 2017 probably wasn't thrilled when the Core i9-7900X dropped with higher performance and the same 10 cores a few months later for just$ 999,to say nothing of the hole Threadripper blew in Intel's HEDT product family by offering 16 cores instead of 10 at the same price.
The 1920X now has twice the cores of its closest-priced Intelcounterpart, and while AMD's Threadripper isn't quite as efficient clock-for-clock, with the two chips pulling down the same base and boost figures, that's just not enough of an impact to matter.
If you happen to be one of the handful of people who won a Core i7-8086K, AMD will upgrade you to a Threadripper 1950X if you're willing to turn your Core i7-8086K in for an exchange.
There's also a new set of SKUs intended to cater to customers who are exclusively interested in Threadripper as a rendering or HPC solution without any of the consumer workloads or games that a lower-core Threadripper might cater to in a crossover role.
