(LT) Mr President, I would like to offermy compliments to my fellow Member, Mr Gahler, who, despite coming from southern Germany, has demonstrated a remarkable knowledge and love of the Arctic and the High North.
Mr Gahler raised a number of points which were not connected to this debate and I would just like to suggest to him that if he writes me a quick note about those issues I am happy to come back to him, but I did not want to take Parliament's time this evening on issues that were not on this debate itself.
Against that backdrop,it is absolutely right for the specific proposals that have been laid on the table- not least including a few new suggestions from Mr Gahler- to be discussed in detail and for us to consider what we can do to intervene against human rights violations all over the world and to help the people of the world.
I especially want to praise andthank Mr Gahler for giving attention to the amendment I tabled concerning the establishment of an Arctic Information Centre at the University of Lapland, and, furthermore, for mentioning it in the report.
Next week, we will be having discussions with the Foreign Minister, then we have the elections, then the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Cooperation Committee, which is travelling to Ukraine, andit has always been the case- Mr Gahler, I am appealing to your sense of fairness here- that we say whether or not things went well after the elections, rather than pre-empting the elections by saying that things will not go well.
