So what causes this geoid shape?
The geoid is the surface of an ideal global ocean in the absence of tides and currents, shaped only by gravity.
The Earth is not actually round in shape;in fact it is geoid.
You can imagine a geoid in the form of a surface, the force of gravity at each point of which is directed vertically.
The Earth is not in reality round in shape,with certainty it is geoid.
Undulation- the distance of the geoid above(positive) or below(negative) the mathematical reference ellipsoid.
In most cases, it can be taken as either a geoid or an ellipsoid.
Note that the very concept of“geoid” was introduced by Johann Listing(pictured below), a physicist and mathematician, in 1873.

Interestingly, the second variant is easily described mathematically, but the first one is not described in principle,since practical measurements of gravity are taken at various points on the surface of our planet to determine the exact shape of the geoid(and hence the Earth).
In pre-satellite days they were devised to give a good fit to the geoid over the limited area of a survey but, with the advent of GPS, it has become natural to use reference ellipsoids(such as WGS84) with centre at the centre of mass of the Earth and minor axis aligned to the rotation axis of the Earth.
Pannotia formed by subduction of exterior oceans(a mechanism called extroversion)[16] over a geoid low, whereas Pangaea formed by subduction of interior oceans(introversion) over a geoid high[17] perhaps caused by superplumes and slab avalanche events.[18] The oceanic crust subducted by Pannotia formed within the Mirovoi superocean that surrounded Rodinia before its 830- 750 Ma break-up and were accreted during the Late Proterozoic orogenies that resulted from the assembly of Pannotia.[19].
