It is also proposing a Council decision concluding that Hungary has taken effective action to correct its excessive deficit and that the suspension of its  2013 Cohesion Fund commitments be lifted.
We already have the first case of sanctions by suspending cohesion funds- Hungary may be deprived of half a billion euros if it does not take action to correct its excessive deficit.
Whereas, whenever the imposition of a non-interest-bearing deposit does not induce the participating Member State concerned to correct its excessive deficit in due time, it is appropriate to intensify the sanctions;

Commissioner Olli Rehn did not answer directly to a journalist's question whether Madrid will receive a one year postponement to correct its excessive deficit or it will be fined, like Hungary.
In particular, the Commission may propose that the Council suspend payments or commitments if the Member State has not taken appropriate action to amend its  Partnership Agreement50 orif the Member State has not taken effective action to correct its excessive deficit.
On 30 May the Commission adopted a proposal for a Council decision to lift the suspension of commitments from the Cohesion Fund for Hungary,after concluding that the country has taken the necessary action to correct its excessive deficit, in line with the Council Recommendation of 13 March 2012(MEMO/12/385).

The European Commission has today adopted a proposal for a Council decision to lift the suspension of commitments from the Cohesion Fund for Hungary,after concluding that the country has taken the necessary action to correct its excessive deficit, in line with the Council Recommendation of 13 March 2012.
This can be done by stepping up the proce- dure whenever the Commission assessment shows that a Member State has failed to take effective action to correct its excessive deficit in time.
Greece is currently in the process of correcting its excessive government deficit.
