The tradition of producing Šar cheese has been passed on to generations for centuries.[1] By the 1890s, the cheese became popular;[2] the Serbian newspaper Carigradski glasnik of 28 July 1901 said that the cheese had overwhelmed the neighbouring markets because of its yellow fatty look and taste which had not been seen in other cheeses.[3].
The Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia has so far drafted expert documents as the basis for the proposal to nominate two natural resources for including in the List of World Natural Heritage:National Park"Šar planina" and the Natural Monument"Đavolja Varoš". The harmony of man and nature has been the basis of the"Man and Biosphere" UNESCO program since 1971.
In order toprotect the mountain's exceptional values, the National Park"Šar planina" was designated in 1993, within the temporary boundaries of 39.000 ha. It is planned that the definite boundaries of the Park encompass an area of around 97,000 ha. The main ridge of this mountain has more than 30 peaks over 2.500 m high, with the highest peak in Serbia, Bistra(2652 m).
