It was hard to say goodbye to my host family, and the Japanese people we met in Itako, as over a period of just a few days they had become such a huge part of our lives.
Through this visit to Itako City, I was able to directly experience the damage caused by the earthquake and sympathize with the pain and sadness of everyone in Japan.

When I heard that we would be doing volunteer activities in Itako City, I imagined the roads, utility poles and buildings destroyed due to liquefaction and I did not know what we should do to help, but when I actually went to Itako City, the atmosphere was peaceful and it had been redeveloped to the extent that one would not have realized the extent of the damage unless one scrutinized the city closely.
However, once I actually visited Itako City in Ibaraki Prefecture, listened to a lecture and participated in volunteer activities myself, I realized that the actual damage was immense and that deep scars still remain as a result.
