In line with Izanami noMikoto following Izanagi no Mikoto into the depths of the underworld, the shukushi is chanted while one's body is washed with pure water, symbolizing that the impurity of the underworld is wiped away, Eda Shrine has become known as the birthplace of purification ceremonies and the birthplace of Shinto ritual prayers.
