This is why the expanse, or internal man, is now called'heaven'.

This appears in a kind of image from all the delights and gladnesses that belong to affection or love, in that when man is in them,he takes no note of time, for he is then in the internal man.
Soul in the Word signifies in general all life,as well internal, or that of the internal man, as external, or that of the external man. .
This is the fourth general principle that conjoins the externalman with the internal; for when a man perceives this corresponding delight within himself, his external man is then beginning to be conjoined with his internal man.

Neither does he know that in order to become a man of the church, truth must be initiated into good in the external ornatural man; still less that there is any orderly arrangement by the Lord in that man in order to effect its conjunction with the internal man.
When a man is being regenerated, then the internal man is to be conjoined with the external man; consequently, the goods andtruths which are of the internal man are to be conjoined with the goods and truths which are of the external man; for a man is a man from goods and truths.
That"physicians" signify preservation from evils is because in the spiritual world diseases are evils and falsities, spiritual diseases being nothing else; for evils andfalsities take away health from the internal man, and induce sicknesses on the mind, and at last pains; nor is anything else signified in the Word by"diseases.".
For"old age" in the internal sense does not signify old age, because the internal man, or man's spirit, does not know what old age is; but as the body or external man grows old, the internal passes into newness of life, man's spirit being perfected by age as his bodily powers diminish.
From what has now been said and from what goes before, it is evident what is signified in theinternal sense by these words of Leah:"God hath given me my reward, because I gave my handmaid to my man;" for by the"handmaid" is signified an affirmative means that serves for the conjunction of the external and the internal man n.
The like happens at the hour of death,when corporeal things begin to be extinguished; and hence every one may see what the internal man is, and what the external; and also what remains are, and how lusts and pleasures, which are of the external man, hinder the Lord's operation through the internal man.
That in the external sense"to see" signifies sight, is evident without explication; and that in the interior sense"to see" signifies understanding, may also be evident,for the sight of the internal man is nothing else than understanding, and therefore in common discourse understanding is called internal sight, and light is predicated of it, as of external sight, and is called intellectual light.
Which new quality should signify the internal spiritual man, or what is the same, the internal spiritual church.
