Whilst it will only be possible to confirmthis return to the long term downward trend in future, the decrease in aid to the manufacturing sector during the period 1994-1996 is welcome.
Aid to the manufacturing sector accounted for just over half the total(€50 million) which represents 4.0% of valued added in total industry.

When considering the overall differences in the Community under the aspect of cohesion,Table 3 shows that the volume of aid in the four cohesion countries has increased from 8 to over 9% of total aid to the manufacturing sector in the Community.
For the Candidate countries as a whole(CC-12), tax exemptions accounted for a larger share of total aid than grants:around 50% of all aid to the manufacturing sector was awarded through tax exemptions compared with an EU average of 29% while aid in the form of grants made up 25% of the total, against an EU average of 62.
Therefore, Table 2 shows aid to the manufacturing sector as a percentage of value added, per person employed in this sector, and in percent of intra-Community exports of manufactured goods.5.
A downward trend is also seen when, as in Table 2, aid to the manufacturing sector is expressed as a percentage of value added and per person employed in this sector6.
