Under Article 8 TFEU the Union must aim to eliminate inequalities and promote equality.
The Community must aim to eliminate inequalities and promote equality between women and men in all its activities Article 3(2) of the EC Treaty.
In all the activities referred to in this Part, the Union shall aim to eliminate inequalities, and to promote equality, between women and men.
The twentieth amendment modifies Article 1(1a), clearly stating the Member States' commitment to promote equal treatment and to eliminate inequalities.

In order to achieve a gender equal society,the Union must continue working to eliminate inequalities and promote equality between men and women in all its policies and actions gender mainstreaming.
How can those demands be justified in relation to a Treaty that requires the Union to aim to eliminate inequalities, promote a high level of employment, guarantee adequate social protection and fight against social exclusion?
The Community's action includes a contribution to high quality education and training andmust seek to eliminate inequalities and promote equality between men and women, pursuant to Article 3 of the Treaty.
In implementing this programme, the Community, in accordance with Article 3(2)of the EC Treaty, aim to eliminate inequalities, and promote equality between men and women, especially since women are often the victims of multiple discrimination;

Regulation No 1260/1999 laying down general provisions on the Structural Funds provides that the Structural Funds should contribute to eliminating inequalities and promoting equality between men and women as part of its policy to strengthen economic and social cohesion.
In all its activity, the Commission will aim to eliminate inequality, to promote equality between men and women, to apply, and I think this is very important, a general clause of non-discrimination, in particular on the basis of sex, and to extend the scope of application of Article 119 of the Treaty.
