Firstly, I should like to congratulate Mrs Schaldemose on the work she has done.
In the shape of Mrs Schaldemose, we have a rapporteur who is looking to bring about further moves in this very area.
This success is due to the extraordinary commitment of all parties, andI should like to express my special thanks to the rapporteurs, Mrs Schaldemose, Mr Brie and Mr Stubb.
However, according to Mrs Schaldemose, that EUR 3 billion is only 5% of the total gambling market in the European Union.
We have done a number of own-initiative studies and questions about it andindeed the author of our last major report, Mrs Schaldemose, will be speaking later and so we have a sustained interest in this topic.
As Mrs Schaldemose said, the CE marking system is not the solution to all our safety problems on the internal market.
IT Mr President,I was unsure as to how to vote on Mrs Schaldemose's report on the integrity of online gambling and for what reason.
Mrs Schaldemose's report calling for a common framework for the marketing of products is one that I welcome and have voted in favour of.
NL Madam President,my warmest thanks to the rapporteurs Mr Stubb, Mrs Schaldemose and Mr Brie for the swift and constructive way in which they have completed their tasks.
Therefore, Mrs Schaldemose's demand for more transparency is perfectly justified and I believe this is where the European project stands or falls.
Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I should, of course, like to thank all my fellow Members who have spoken about my report, particularly Mr Itälä, Mr Gerbrandy, Mrs Herczog, Mr Geier,Mr van Dalen, Mrs Schaldemose, Mrs de Lange and Mr Vaughan.
For example, Mrs Schaldemose wants the importers to bear responsibility for ensuring that the products they import comply with EU rules.
Considering the good work done by my Danish fellow Member, Mrs Schaldemose, I am voting in favour of the report concerning the directive on general product safety and market surveillance.
Mrs Schaldemose, I can only agree with you, and say that the responsibility of the Member States for market surveillance must not be called into question.
The next item is a short presentation of the report by Mrs Schaldemose, on behalf of the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection, on the integrity of online gambling.
PL Mrs Schaldemose rightly points out that the decision in question, aimed at creating a broader and more rigorous system of Community control of the marketing of products, may have a significant impact on the conduct of international trade. This calls for a separate analysis.
I know that on the initiative of Mrs Schaldemose, Parliament adopted a report on 10 March, even though a number of Members supported an opposing resolution.
The report by Mrs Schaldemose- which I voted in favour of- confirms the need to review the directive of 2001, given the difficulties Member States faced in transposing it.
I therefore welcome the reports by our fellow Members, Mrs Schaldemose and Mr Brie, who advocate a reduction in red tape and a common legal framework for future sectoral provisions so that in future, as much coherence as is politically and technically feasible is guaranteed.
Mr President, Mrs Schaldemose has just highlighted the quality of this debate, particularly on the specific point of the consumer agency which, unless I am mistaken, already exists in Canada, and Mr Dalli will tell us how things stand today.
The three reports before us- by Mr Brie, Mrs Schaldemose and Mr Stubb- deal with the introduction of goods into the EU market, the application of technical rules to products lawfully marketed, and arrangements for accreditation and market surveillance.
IT Madam President, ladies and gentlemen,I would like to thank Mrs Schaldemose for her report which, above all, must be praised for proposing concrete measures to strengthen the surveillance systems for movement within the common European market of products that are safe for European consumers.
As rapporteur for PPE-DE Group, I also focused on amendments to the report by Mrs Christel Schaldemose on increasing importers' responsibilities, decreasing the administrative burden on small and medium-sized enterprises and retaining the new approach as a basic framework for the marketing of products.
In conclusion, may I thank Mrs Christel Schaldemose and the other rapporteurs for constructive cooperation that has helped us to unify the terminology, processes and models of assessing compliance so that we can use them in the revision of sectoral directives, in particular the long-awaited Toys Directive, to the satisfaction of all European consumers.
