The negotiations on the establishment of a diversification fund for Africa's commodities were carried over from the forty-eighth session of the General Assembly.
It further requested the Secretary-General to undertake"a study on the need for and the feasibility of the establishment of a diversification fund for Africa's commodities" for presentation to the General Assembly in 1993.
The establishment of a diversification fund and, as important, the establishment of national diversification councils, in line with the recommendations of the FAO report, could thus provide a needed focus and stimulus towards greater national commitment and effort for the preparation of diversification projects.
In this regard,a comprehensive approach could be achieved through the establishment of a diversification fund for Africa's commodities, as called for by the General Assembly in its resolution 48/214 of 23 December 1993.
SUMMARY(i) This document has been prepared in response to the request made to the Secretary-General in the United Nations New Agenda for the Development of Africa for a"study on the need for and the feasibility of the establishment of a diversification fund for Africa's commodities" for presentation to the General Assembly in 1993.
Donors should also provide resources for the establishment of a diversification fund for Africa, as called for in General Assembly resolution 49/104 of 19 December 1994.
