September 9 2002 Itaba massacre.
With regard to the Itaba case, soldiers were arrested, tried and sentenced to four months in prison by a military tribunal, and then freed.
She strongly condemned the army attacks on civilians,in particular the incidents at Itaba, Kanyosha and Rutegama.
On 19 August 2002, the head of Itaba district in Gihosha region(Bujumbura Urban province), Janvier Ndahishimiye, was reportedly killed in a grenade explosion.

She added that four of the five people arrested in connection with the Manlan case were police officers and that neither the Principal State Prosecutor northe Chief Military Prosecutor appeared to have taken any action in the Itaba case, in which an appeal had been lodged.
Ms. Kéita-Bocoum(Special Rapporteur of the Commission on Human Rights on the situation of human rights in Burundi),referring to the massacre at Itaba, stressed that neither the Governmental Commission on Human Rights nor the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights had been able to play any role in the investigation.
As for the end date of the commission ' s jurisdiction, many of them expressed the view that it should be set at the time of its establishment, and in any event beyond 2000, to include the massacres perpetrated after the signature of the Arusha Agreement,notably the massacre on 9 September 2002 of 183 civilians in Itaba, Gitega Province.
A briefing paper by Human Rights Watch refers to the case of high-school students abducted at Musama in 2001 and pressed into service by the rebel FDD; this information was provided by a young man who was also abducted and then wounded when he escaped.The briefing paper says that these youngsters were present in the Itaba area in October 2002.
