Launch of Falcon 9 carrying ORBCOMM OG2-M1, July 2014.
ORBCOMM MAGHREB:(Authorized for the"Orbcomm" satellite system).
Technology experiments and data transfer via the Orbcomm system.
New technologies, such as the ORBCOMM system, are also being used to track vessels and cargo trucks.
With help from a ground infrastructure of Gateway Earth Stations(GES),the satellites connected the ORBCOMM users to the worldwide telecommunication network.
ORBCOMM was deploying a constellation of 28 small communication satellites in orbit 775 kilometres above Earth.
These international ventures include, among others, the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization, the International Mobile Satellite Organization,Iridium and ORBCOMM.
ORBCOMM communicators were designed to measure the Doppler shift on the signals downlinked from the satellite.
The TacSat-1 spacecraft was based on Orbital Sciences' MicroStar platform, also used for the Orbcomm communications constellation. TacSat-1 inherited its avionic bus from an unlaunched Orbcomm-satellite.
However, platform operators are increasingly investigating the use of other, potentially cheaper, space-based data collection systems, including the International Data Collection System(IDCS)and commercial systems such as Orbcomm and Iridium.
On 19 June 2008, six German Orbcomm communications satellites were launched into Earth orbit by a Cosmos-3M carrier rocket from the Kapustin Yar launch site.
Those messages could be delivered via an active circuit,or be stored in memory at the Gateway for retrieval at the customer's convenience. The ORBCOMM system also had the unique capability of determining and reporting the position of remote communicators to users.
