In considering the recommendations made by the CGE, Parties, at SBI 23,requested the group to recommend ways to improve the reporting of projects identified in national communications.

When identifying specific areaswhere information can be improved in the reporting of projects by nonAnnex I Parties, it is helpful to consider the gaps and differences according to the sector covered by the funding- public, private or carbon finance.
With regard to enhancing the sharing of information among Parties and institutions,the CGE has provided technical advice on ways to improve the reporting of projects identified in national communications and on a template to report on cross-cutting themes in national communications.
A technical paper prepared by the CGE on ways to improve the reporting of projects identified in national communications from Parties not included in Annex I to the Convention(FCCC/SBI/2007/7) and a background paper on stocktaking of financial and technical assistance needs and support resources/services available for the PICs were presented at the workshop.
Background: In response to requests from Parties at SBI 23, the Consultative Group of Experts on National Communications from Parties not included in Annex I to the Convention(CGE)prepared reports recommending ways to improve the reporting of projects identified in the national communications and to implement a cost-effective and comprehensive training strategy to support the preparation of national communications.
The SBI requested theCGE to make recommendations on ways to improve the reporting of projects identified in national communications from non-Annex I Parties in accordance with Article 12, paragraph 4, of the Convention, and to report to, and advise, the SBI, at its twenty-sixth session(May 2007), on ways to improve access to financial and technical support for such projects. .
In the document on ways to improve reporting of projects, the CGE examines what types of information are required by potential funders in order to make a decision on aproject; addresses what types of information are generally provided in national communications from non-Annex I Parties; and examines what principal improvements can be made to meet the information needs of funders in the public, private or carbon finance sectors.
The SBI noted its request under agenda item 4(a)to the CGE to make recommendations on ways to improve the reporting of projects identified in national communications in accordance with Article 12, paragraph 4, of the Convention; to report on ways to improve access to financial and technical support for such projects; and to advise the SBI on this matter at its twenty-sixth session(May 2007).
