The popular Hindu hymn, Jai Jagdish Hare was composed by local scholar Shardha Ram Phillauri from Phillaur some time in the 1870s. The exact date is not known. Shardha Ram Phillauri also wrote what is generally considered to be the first novel in Hindi.

Shardha Ram Phillauri(30 September 1837[1]- 24 June 1881) was a Hindu missionary, social reformer, astrologer, and writer, best remembered for his contributions to Hindi and Punjabi literature. He has been called the"father of modern Punjabi prose."[2].
শারধা রাম ফিল্লাউরী( জন্ম,৩০ সেপ্টেম্বর১৮৩৭[ 1]- মৃত্যু২৪ জুন১৮৮১) একজন হিন্দু ধর্মপ্রচারক, সমাজ সংস্কারক, জ্যোতিষী, এবং লেখক ছিলেন। হিন্দি এবং পাঞ্জাবি সাহিত্যেে তাঁর অবদানের জন্য বেশী স্মরণীয় তিনি। তাঁকে বলা হয়" আধুনিক পাঞ্জাবী গদ্যেের জনক"[ 2]।
