There have been efforts to investigate empirically the importance of the impact of entrepreneurship on economic performance, especially at the enterprise, region or industry level e.g. Audretsch, 1995, Audretsch and Fritsch, 2002 and Caves, 1998.
Audretsch and Fritsch(1996) conjectured that one possible explanation for the disparity in results between the United States and Germany may lay in the role that innovative activity, and therefore the ability of new firms to ultimately displace the existing enterprises, plays in newfirm start-ups.
Despite these counteracting forces, entrepreneurship has emerged as the engine of economic and social development throughout the world.1 The role of entrepreneurship has changed dramatically,fundamentally shifting between what Audretsch and Thurik(2001) introduced as the model of the managed economy and that of the entrepreneurial economy.
In particular, Audretsch and Thurik(2001) argue that the model of the managed economy is the political, social and economic response to an economy dictated by the forces of large-scale production, reflecting the predominance of the production factors of capital and(unskilled) labour as the sources of competitive advantage.
