Participants represented approximately 120 national or European-wide organisations and individual undertakings, among them ACEA(Association des Constructeurs Européens d'Automobile), JAMA(Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association), CECRA(Conseil Européen du Commerceet de la Réparation Automobiles) and BEUC(Bureau Européen des Unions de Consommateurs) notably.
BEUC believes, may overshadow the benefits introduced by the amended Articles 129a and 129 as they could, amongst other things, prevent Member States from taking unilateral action to protect consumers and public health if new dangers arise in areas which have already been subject to EU harmonization measures.

On car distribution, a subject raised in the meeting, BEUC praised the Commission's recent proposals introducing more competition in the sector, in particular the introduction of multi-brand dealerships and the loosened link between sales and after sales services which bring more choice and competitive prices for consumers.
The EESC public hearing, which was planned well before the publication of the Better Regulation Package, was held on 26 May and attended by representatives of the Commission, the Council, the Parliament, the European Ombudsman, the European Data Protection Supervisor and a speaker from the College of Europe, with an audience made up of representatives of the permanent representations of the Member States,academia and civil society BEUC, EMI, EIM, ITG, GIZ, etc.
These in cluded BEUC(Bureau Européen des Unions de Consommateurs), industry representative organisations(Association Européenne des Spécialités Pharmaceutiques Grand Public, Euro pean Federation of Pharmaceutical In dustries' Associations, European Generic Medicines Association, Fédération Européenne de la Santé Animale) and professional representative organisations Federation of Veterinarians in Europe, Groupement des Pharmaciens de l'Union Européenne and the Standing Committee of European Doctors.
One can either, as Mr Whitehead has done, argue for the setting up of European consumer information, with campaigns and information centres, or- and this is the argument which I myself support- one can argue that the already established national consumer organisations should work togetherfor an appropriate re-adjustment, in concrete terms by strengthening BEUC, and then acting jointly in the political arena.
