Recently, in Saurimo, a UNITA detainee died in custody, possibly for lack of medical care. Several UNITA members were found dead on 1 October, apparently the victims of an ANP revenge attack.
On the other hand,it is reported that FAA troops have started laying protective minefields around their positions in the Huambo, Saurimo and Luena regions.
With the completion of construction projects andstrengthening of water supply systems to the cities of Dundo(North Lunda), Saurimo(South Lunda) and Ndalatando(North Kwanza), it was improved the water supply and the increase of the cover level in those cities.
In addition to reinforcing the diamond mining locations,they have resorted to laying protective minefields around their positions in the towns of Luena, Saurimo, Malange, Quibaxe, Uige and Kuito.
As of 13 January 1994, WFP had been able to reach seven destinations from Catumbela airport- Malange, Kuito/Bié, Huambo,Luena, Saurimo, Menongue and Cubal- which will ease the congestion at Luanda and allow for increased deliveries.

Government sources have reported UNITA troop and logistic build-up in the provinces of Bengo, Huila, Cuando Cubango, Kwanza Sul, Lunda Sul and Moxico, and UNITA troop movements around the cities of Kuito/Bié, Menongue,Luena, Saurimo and others.
In addition, regional headquarters will be established in the northern(Uige), southern(Lubango), central(Huambo), eastern(Luena),north-eastern(Saurimo) and south-eastern(Menongue) regions of Angola.
With initial logistic difficulties having been overcome and improved cooperation on the ground with troops of the Government of Angola and the União Nacional para la Independencia Total de Angola(UNITA), the United Nations military and police elements have been deployed to 22 team sites throughout the country, in addition to the headquarters in Luanda and recently established regional headquarters in Huambo, Lubango, Luena,Menongue, Saurimo and Uige.

Under the direction of the Force Commander/ Chief Military Observer, the military observer component of UNAVEM III will consist of a headquarters unit at Luanda, sub-units based in six regional headquarters at Uige(north), Huambo(central),Lubango(south), Saurimo(north-east), Luena(east) and Menongue(south-east), as well as 53 team sites.
A total of 90 incidents was reported from 1 October to 7 November, 54 of which have been confirmed by UNAVEM III. While many of these cases were related to disputes over diamond-producing areas or cattle rustling, on several occasions during the reporting period Government forces made incursions into areas vacated by UNITA; the Government forces also took over temporarily several locations around the city of Kuito(Bié Province),and one near Saurimo Lunda Sul Province.
