Both the‘old' ConTEXt(Mark II) and the‘new' ConTEXt(Mark IV) should run out of the box after TEX Live installation, andshould need no special attention as long as you stick to using tlmgr for updates.
By default, tlmgr now saves one backup of each package updated(tlmgr option autobackup 1), so broken package updates can be easily reverted with tlmgr restore.
