The fusion-energy advisory committee is preparing a ten-year research plan, due by the start of next year, that could conceivably lead to more backing for the upstarts.
The DEMO is for the purpose of demonstrating the generation of fusion energy, and numerous devices are to be attached and the reactor is envisaged to have a very complicated structure.
In its interim report, the committee said that withdrawal from ITER could isolate scientists from the international effort andrecommended adopting a national strategic plan for fusion energy.
Currently, the other parties involved in the ITER project- China, the European Union, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Russia-have developed national strategic plans for fusion energy demonstration, but the U.S. does not have such a plan.
Cooperation among the three countries, together with other parties, in the field of fusion energy is being promoted mainly in the ITER project, which is a major international project aiming at an environmentally clean source of energy for humanity.
Once the Broader Approach(BA) Activities(research and development for the demonstration power plant; the next step after ITER) are complete,Japan aims to have an outlook in place regarding the realization of fusion energy in the mid 21st century.
International Fusion Energy Research Center was completed in March 2011 and began research as a base of"broader approach(BA) activities" for conducting nuclear fusion energy research from various angles, in order to support and complement the ITER program and to develop the next stage of the ITER, which is“a prototype reactor”.
A variety of research groups conduct joint research with each other and exchange members while researching a wide range of topics that includes crystal optics, atomic physics, the research and development of laser technology and high quality optical elements, gravitational-wave astronomy, experimental astronomy, nuclear fusion energy development, high-energy accelerator development, and large-scale research that includes research into X-ray free-electron lasers.
In the field of renewables, Eni's CEO explained how the company will focus its research mainly on solar energy, on energy storage, on advanced biofuels, on biomass and on wind energy, also recalling the agreement withMIT for the joint development of technologies for the production of nuclear fusion energy.
