In 2001, the Secretary-General nominated Adolf Ogi, former President of the Swiss Confederation, to serve as his Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace.
A small office to assist with the preparation for the International Year was established in Geneva in April 2004 under the leadership of Adolf Ogi, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace.
In particular, I thank Mr. Adolf Ogi, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace, for his efforts to promote the draft.
During the pre-session phase we were honoured with the gracious presence oftwo eminent world leaders: Mr. Adolf Ogi, President of the Swiss Confederation, and Mr. Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Denmark.

The Mission also organized several sports and cultural events to promote national reconciliation. The sports for peace programme,which is expected to bring Liberians throughout the country together to play football, volleyball and kickball, was launched on 2 March by my Special Adviser on Sports for Development and Peace, Adolf Ogi.
We also thank Mr. Adolf Ogi, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace, for his hard work, and we will continue to support the work of his Office.
Furthermore, the United States delegation acknowledges the valuable contributions being made by the United Nations Office for the International Year of Sport and Physical Education, the Office of the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace, the United Nations New York Office of Sport for Development andPeace and by Mr. Adolf Ogi of Switzerland, the Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace.
We also welcome the efforts of Mr. Adolf Ogi, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace, and his contribution to the dissemination of messages regarding the value of sports for development.
Mr. Hachani(Tunisia)(spoke in French): Allow me at the outset to congratulate the Secretary-General on his report entitled"Sport for Development and Peace: the way forward"(A/61/373) and to tell him how much my delegation appreciates the work done by Mr. Adolf Ogi, former President of Switzerland, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace, as well as for his tireless efforts to ensure the success of programmes aimed at promoting sport worldwide.
Under the leadership of Adolf Ogi, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace, an office was established in Geneva to assist with the preparation and implementation of activities for the International Year.
I would like to take advantage of this opportunity to pay tribute to the work of Mr. Adolf Ogi, the Secretary-General's first Special Adviser, and to his successor, Mr. Wilfried Lemke, who can count on the support of the authorities of Monaco.
In particular, I wish to thank Mr. Adolf Ogi, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace, and Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, for their constant efforts in that regard.
I also wish to express the thanks and appreciation of the Government of Ghana, our people andmembers of our delegation to Mr. Adolf Ogi, President of the Swiss Confederation, and to the Government and the people of the Swiss Federation for hosting this important meeting and for placing such magnificent facilities at our disposal.

At the initiative of Mr. Adolf Ogi, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace and former President of the Swiss Confederation, Switzerland held the International Conference on Sport and Development at Macolin in February 2003.
The opening of the Second Meeting was preceded by a ceremony at which statements were delivered by the following: Vladimir Petrovsky,Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva; Adolf Ogi, President of Switzerland; Martine Brunschwig Graf, State Councillor of the Republic and Canton of Geneva; Alain Vaissade, Mayor of the City of Geneva; Her Royal Highness, Princess Astrid of Belgium; Elisabeth Reusse-Decrey, President of the Swiss Campaign against Landmines; Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills.
At the initiative of Mr. Adolf Ogi, the Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace and former President of the Swiss Confederation, who is here with us today, my country organized the Macolin Conference last February.
At the international level,my country intends to continue to support Mr. Adolf Ogi, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace, and to provide financing and logistical support to the United Nations Office in Geneva for the International Year of Sport and Physical Education.
A very important role here falls to Mr. Adolf Ogi, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace. We are ready to continue our fruitful cooperation with the Special Adviser, and we support the ongoing activities of the New York-based United Nations Office of Sport for Development and Peace, headed by Mr. Djibril Diallo.
Over 70 delegates from 12 countries participated in the event organized by Adolf Ogi, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace, Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General, and Right To Play's Chief Executive Officer and four-time Olympic gold medallist Johann Olav Koss.
Tunisia would also like to express its gratitude to Mr. Adolf Ogi, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace, for all his efforts and for his activities to ensure the success of programmes to promote sport throughout the world and for the benefit of all.
The role of UNFIP includes providing support to Adolf Ogi, the Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace, particularly with regard to his activities to promote field-level projects using sport as a programme tool, and involving United Nations funds, programmes and agencies with partners from the sports world.
