This branch of international law defines war crimes, crimes against humanity and grave violations arising from armed conflicts such as genocide,ethnic cleansing, the forcible transfer of populations, torture and extrajudicial executions.

Noting that the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court(A/CONF.183/9)defines the deportation or forcible transfer of population as a crime against humanity and the unlawful deportation or transfer of the civilian population as well as ordering the displacement of the civilian population as war crimes.
These include: that all persons deprived of their liberty must be treated with humanity and with respect to the inherent dignity of the human person; prohibitions against taking hostages, abductions, or unacknowledged detention; the international protection of the rights of persons belonging to minorities against genocide and discrimination;deportation or forcible transfer of populations without grounds under international law; and forced displacement by expulsion or other coercive means from the area in which the persons are lawfully present.
However, under its article 7 crimes against Humanity include inter alia extermination;deportation or forcible transfer of population; and persecution against any identifiable community or collectivity on political, racial, national, ethnic, cultural, religious, gender… or other grounds that are universally recognized as impermissible under international law, in connection with any act referred to in this article or any other crime falling within the jurisdiction of the Court.
