In this context, mention should be made of the 2004 workshop on"Forests and forest ecosystems: Promoting synergy in the implementation of the Rio conventions" organized by the secretariats of the three Rio instruments, which approved recommendations on crosscutting aspects of these three instruments in terms of standard obligations, implementation measures and the need for capacitybuilding.
Given the importance of forests to sustainable development, societal well-being and the provision of key environmental services, climate change poses a very serious threat not only to forests and forest ecosystems but also to millions of people who depend on forests to various degrees for their livelihoods, shelter, food and water.
It noted the report prepared by the UNCCD secretariat on the"Workshop on forests and forest ecosystems: Promoting synergy in the implementation of the three Rio Conventions"33 which was organized by the secretariats of the UNCCDand the CBD, in cooperation with the UNFCCC secretariat, and held in Viterbo, Italy, from 5 to 7 April 2004.

Forests are not only trees, and forest ecosystems are more fragile, longer-lived and less closely controlled than crop fields.
This activity would provide significant additional protectionof ecologically important forests, including old growth and primary forests and fragile forest ecosystems.
For example, primary forests are generally more carbon dense and biologically diverse than other forest ecosystems, including modified natural forests and plantations.
Additional suggestions included references to the role of youth in maintaining healthy forests and improving forest ecosystems, as well as an enhanced framework for cooperation that recognizes nationaland regional realities in sustainable forest management.
