In this context, in September 1998 the General Assembly convened a high-level meeting on renewal of the dialogue on strengthening international economic cooperation for development through partnership, on the overall theme of“The social and economic impact of globalization and interdependence and their policy implications”.
Taking into account that the Assembly decided to hold a two-day high-level dialogue at its fifty-second session on the themeof the social and economic impact of globalization and interdependence and their policy implications, the following suggestions which build on those made in previous reports on the modalities of the dialogue may be considered.
Sustainable development and international economic cooperation: renewal of the dialogue on strengthening international economic cooperation for development through partnership[93(d)]: High-level dialogue on the theme of the social and economic impact of globalization and interdependence and their policy implications.
Expressing satisfaction with the holding on 17 and 18 September 1998 of the first high-level dialogue of the General Assembly on the social and economic impact of globalization and interdependence and their policy implications, including the use of panels which were not part of the formal proceedingsand round-table discussions which promoted interactive dialogue.
Accordingly, the General Assembly agreed to hold a high-level dialogue for a period of two days at the fifty-first session on the theme of the social and economic impact of globalization and interdependence and their policy implications.
Noting with satisfaction the renewal of the dialogue on strengthening international cooperation for development through partnership, through the convening of the high-level dialogue on the theme of the social and economic impact of globalization and interdependence and their policy implications, held on 17 and 18 September 1998, which could pave the way for further consideration of the issues of minimizing the negative impacts and maximizing the benefits of globalization, particularly for the developing countries.
In this context, we welcome the General Assembly's decision to hold the first high-level dialogue for two days earlier this month on the themeof the social and economic impact of globalization and interdependence and their policy implications.
The high-level dialogue on the theme of the social and eco- nomic impact of globalization and interdependence and their policy implications was thus concluded.
Mrs. CHAVEZ(Costa Rica), introducing the draft resolution on behalf of the Group of 77 and China, and Colombia on behalf of the countries members of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries, said that, in its resolution 50/122 of 20 December 1995, the General Assembly agreed to hold a high-level dialogue for a period of two days at its fifty-first session on the social and economic impact of globalization and interdependence and their policy implications.
That resolution agreed to defer the holding of a high-level dialogue on the theme of the social and economic impact of globalization and interdependence and their policy implications to the fifty-second session of the General Assembly.
The Chairman informed members of the Committee that he had received a letter from the President of the General Assembly requesting him to conduct, on the President's behalf as a matter of priority, consultations with Member States on the date, modalities and focus of the first high-level dialogue for a period of two days to be held by the General Assembly pursuant to its resolution 51/174;such dialogue should focus on the economic and social impact of globalization and interdependence and their policy implications.
Mr. Ka(Senegal)(interpretation from French): By convening, as a prelude to the general debate of the fifty-third session, this high-level dialogue on the themeof the social and economic impact of globalization and interdependence and their policy implications, we are certainly addressing, in advance, one of the major issues to be raised at this session.
Delegations were of the view that the overall theme for the high-level dialogue should be, as determined in General Assembly resolution 50/122,“the social and economic impact of globalization and interdependence and their policy implications”.

By its resolution 50/122, the Assembly decided that the theme for the first high-level dialogue would be the social and economic impact of globalization and interdependence and their policy implications.
The General Assembly decided that, in accordance with resolution 50/122 of 20 December 1997 and decision 52/480 of 4 June 1998, the high-level dialogue on the themeof the social and economic impact of globalization and interdependence and their policy implications should be held on Thursday, 17 September and Friday, 18 September 1998.
The Secretary of the Executive Board informed delegations that, following a decision of the Bureau, the third regular session 1998 was being held on 14-16 September and 21-22 September in order toallow delegations to take part in the high-level dialogue of the General Assembly on the theme of the social and economic impact of globalization and interdependence and their policy implications, which had been scheduled for 17-18 September.
