The symposium was held in conjunction with the ThirdRyoko Akamatsu Award Ceremony, and the recipient of the award, Ivanka Corti of Italy, then a member of CEDAW, made the keynote speech.
At its 568th meeting, on 5 August 2002, Ms. Ivanka Corti, on behalf of the Chairperson of the pre-sessional working group, Mr. Göran Melander, introduced the report of the group CEDAW/PSWG/2002/EXC/CRP.1 and Add.1-10.
Charlotte Abaka, Chairperson of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, and Ivanka Corti and Aída González Martínez, also representing the Committee, attended the meeting.

The event, which had been very well attended, was highly visible thanks to the participation of the President of the fifty-ninth session of the General Assembly, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations,three former Chairpersons, namely Ivanka Corti, Salma Khan and Charlotte Abaka, as well as high-level officials of the United Nations system and of civil society.

The following representatives of the human rights treaty bodies attended: Mr. Francisco José Aguilar Urbina(Chairperson, Human Rights Committee), Mr. Philip Alston(Chairperson, Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights), Mr. Michael Banton(Chairperson, Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination), Ms. Akila Belembaogo(Chairperson, Committee on the Rights of the Child),Ms. Ivanka Corti(Chairperson, Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women) and Mr. Alexis Dipanda-Mouelle Chairperson, Committee against Torture.

The Chairperson stated that the Committee had not been directly represented at the fifty-third session of the Commission on Human Rights,but that Ms. Ivanka Corti had attended in her capacity as Chairperson of the meeting of persons chairing human rights treaty bodies.
