In its resolution 214(XIX), dated 7 May 1997, the Commission established the Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade and Economic Globalization.

Furthermore, the Commission adopted resolutions for the establishment of two other specialized subsidiary committees, which will become operational in 1998-1999, namely, the Committee on Transport and the Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade and Economic Globalization in countries of the ESCWA region.

Establishes the Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade and Economic Globalization in the Countries of the ESCWA Region, which will be made up of representatives of the States members of the Commission that specialize in this field and will undertake the following tasks.
Recalling also Commission resolution 214(XIX) of 7 May 1997,in which the Commission decided to establish a technical committee on liberalization of foreign trade and economic globalization in the countries of the ESCWA region, the meetings of which would be held annually.
The institution of the Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade and Economic Globalization epitomizes the positive response on the part of ESCWA member States to a series of multidisciplinary activities started by ESCWA in 1994-1995 to address the issue of economic globalization.
Recalling also Commission resolution 214(XIX) of 7 May 1997,in which the Commission provides for the establishment of a technical committee on liberalization of foreign trade and economic globalization in the countries of the ESCWA region, whose meetings are to be held annually.
Cooperation with the secretariat of the Commission in establishing programmes to assist the countries of the region in outlining appropriate national and regional economic development policies to enable those countries to take greater advantage of the trends towards liberalization of foreign trade and economic globalization;
Establishment of the Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade and Economic Globalization in the Countries of the ESCWA Region E/1997/40/Add.1.
The 13-member Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia(ESCWA), which reports to the Economic and Social Council, and its main subsidiary body,the Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade and Economic Globalization in the Countries of the ESCWA Region, meet biennially.

The six intergovernmental committees are:( a) the Statistical Committee;( b) the Committee on Social Development;( c) the Committee on Energy;( d) the Committee on Water Resources;( e) the Committee on Transport; and( f)the Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade and Economic Globalization in the countries of the ESCWA region.

The Commission recalled its resolutions 214(XIX) of 7 May 1997 and 219(XX) of 27 May 1999 concerning the frequency of sessions of the subsidiary bodies of the Commission and the establishment of a technical committee on the liberalization of foreign trade and economic globalization in the countries of the Western Asia region.

These subsidiary bodies and the number of days of meetings for each one are as follows: the Statistics Committee,(3 days); the Committee on Social Development(3 days); the Committee on Energy(2 days); the Committee on Water Resources(3 days); the Committee on Transport(2 days); and the Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade and Economic Globalization in the Countries of the ESCWA Region 3 days.

The decision of the Commission to establish the Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade and Economic Globalization and to convene the Committee on Water Resources annually instead of biennially signalled the increased interest in using ESCWA as a regional forum for interaction on this matter.
Approves the amendment of Commission resolutions 212(XIX) and 214(XIX) to the effect that the sessions of the Committee on Water Resources and the Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade and Economic Globalization in the Countries of the ESCWA Region shall be held biennially rather than annually;
Aware that the steadily growing trend towards the liberalization of foreign trade and economic globalization, the conclusion of a series of multilateral trade agreements within the framework of the World Trade Organizationand the emergence of a large number of economic blocs will transform the international trading system in the future.
Approves the amendment of resolutions 212(XIX) and 214(XIX) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia to the effect that the sessions of the Committee on Water Resources and of the Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade and Economic Globalization in the Countries of the ESCWA Region shall be held biennially rather than annually;
At the 34th meeting, on 18 July, the Council adopted draft resolution VI, entitled"Establishment of the Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade and Economic Globalization in the Countries of the ESCWA Region", recommended by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia E/1997/40/Add.1, chap. I, sect. E.
