Update on the activities of the Expert Panel on Nitrogen and Food.
The co-Chair of the Expert Panel on Nitrogen and Food gave an update on the work related to food consumptionand nitrogen emissions.
The Task Force planned the ongoing work of its Expert Panel on Nitrogen Budgets(EPNB) and its Expert Panel on Nitrogen and Food EPNF.
Finally, the Task Force reported on progress on a guidance document on nitrogen and food that was due by the end of 2011 informal document No. 18.
To guide its further work, the Task Force invited the Working Group on Strategies and Review to indicate whether it agreed that the study on nitrogen and food.
The Expert Panel on Nitrogen and Food is currently focusing on finalizing its report,"Nitrogen on the table", and a scientific paper containing the results.
The results of the sixth meeting of the Expert Panel on the Mitigation of Agricultural Nitrogen, the third meeting of the Expert Panel on Nitrogen and Food and the sixth meeting of the Expert Panel on Nitrogen Budgets are also presented here.
On behalf of the Expert Panel on Nitrogen and Food, a representative of Italy presented the draft summary of the report"Nitrogen on the table: The influence of food choices on nitrogen emissions and the European environment.
The Task Force agreed that its sixth meeting, to be held in Italy from 10 to 12 May 2011, would cover all the items in the workplan of the Task Force, and be arranged to coincide with meetings of its expert panels on mitigation of agricultural nitrogen, nitrogen and food, and nitrogen budgets.
In this regard,the Task Force agreed that the forthcoming report of the Expert Panel on Nitrogen and Food:'Nitrogen on the table: The influence of food choices on nitrogen emissions and the European environment' would be published as a'Special Report' of the European Nitrogen Assessment.
Through its Expert Panel on Nitrogen and Food the Task Force is now preparing to publish its results on how behavioural change in relation to food choice can complement nitrogen mitigation actions based on technical measures in the food chain, including the potential impact of several scenarios of dietary change.
The Co-Chairs of the Task Force's Expert Panel on Nitrogen and Food(experts from EFMA and the Netherlands) presented a workplan to create a better understanding of the relationship between human diets and the nitrogen cycle, including defining product categories and environmental effects in relation to those categories.
The Task Force welcomed the progress in work on nitrogen and human food and invited the relevant experts to report in detail at its next meeting in May 2010.

IV. Food consumption: effects on health and nitrogen pollution.
A representative of FAO presented the results of theglobal study on livestock, environment and nitrogen use efficiency in animal food chains.

Finally, UNIDO is continuing to develop for GEF a global project for the control of nitrogen-containing pollutants, in partnership with United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP) and Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations FAO.
These changes will exacerbate current environmental problems unless urgent action is taken to improve the efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus use and to reevaluate future per capita food consumption patterns.
