Ms. Orlowski(Director, Policymaking Organs Secretariat and External Relations) said that the report contained in document IDB.34/9/Add.1 was quite detailed in its analysis and scope, addressing many of the questions that had been raised by delegations during the earlier meetings of the Board during its thirty-fourth session, and therefore spoke for itself.
Ms. Orlowski(Director, Policymaking Organs Secretariat), introducing the agenda item, said that the report of the Director-General in document IDB.36/23 contained background information on administrative matters, such as the date and place of the session and budgetary information, as well as substantive information on the agenda proposed for the session and the related documentation.
Ms. Orlowski(Director, Policy-making Organs) said that the Secretariat took note of the interest shown in the agenda item and the various views expressed, including the reference to a need for more time for discussions and analysis of the proposals made and the request for a more detailed breakdown of the savings that would result from holding only one session of the Board in non-General Conference years.
Ms. Orlowski(Director, Policymaking Organs Secretariat), introducing the agenda item, said Member States would recall that at previous sessions of the Board the representatives of certain regional groups had enquired about the extent of the contribution of non-governmental organizations to the accomplishment of UNIDO's objectives and asked for information about the status of bilateral relations with intergovernmental and governmental organizations.
Ms. Orlowski(Director, Policy-making Organs Secretariat and External Relations) said that, while the current arrangements with respect to the number and duration of sessions provided Member States with a broader perspective, the alternative of eliminating the first session of the year and holding only one four-day session of the Board during non-General Conference years would have the advantage of enabling the Organization to save some US$200,000.
